The first book I bought. It shows how that creating beautiful, healthy bonsai is a wonderful skill that anyone can learn, with a little time, patience, and this all-inclusive manual. With color photos and drawings to illustrate the points, it introduces all the cultivation techniques; offers expert advice on location, soil types, watering, and pest control; and provides intricate instruction on training the bonsai--including pruning, wiring and stretching it. An A-to-Z guide of all the popular species. Each entry gives some background on the plant, and includes suggestions for acquiring the bonsai and directions on how to position it in the room for best results.

Bonsai: Aus heimischen Bäumen und Sträuchern. Anzucht, Gestaltung, Pflege (Werner M. Busch, 2002)

Cultivate delightful Bonsai from from readily available, inexpensive seeds and saplings - this uncomplicated how-to book explains it step by step with many full-color photos. Practical instructions (using a minimum of Japanese terminology) explain the common bonsai styles and how to achieve them. It demystifies the ancient art of bonsai, allowing anyone to enjoy the pleasures and rewards of this fun and fulfilling pastime.

Bonsai: Vom Grundkurs zum Meister (Horst Stahl, 2001)

This book actually contains two volumes - the first volume covering the basics, whereas the second deals with more advanced techniques. If you do not own a single bonsai book, then this one is surely the one I would buy - excellent (and comparable cheap) book covering all important part of bonsai.

Bonsai Technik 1 (John Yoshio Naka, 1984)

Illustrated with John Naka's drawings, this book does a great job of explaining the techniques and problems encountered in styling and caring for bonsai. His book together with the second book (see below) on technique are essential for classic styling reference - surely a must have book.

This is the second book by John Y. Naka that delves more into Bonsai styling concerns.

Junipers: Growing & Styling Juniper Bonsai (Wayne Schoech, 2007)

This book contains many beautiful colored pictures. It explains basic and more advanced techniques focusing on Junipers, arguably the most popular bonsai in the world. Among basic techniques, ramification with pinching, puning and thinning etc. is explained in great details. Basic Junipers care, maintenance, and other basics are not left aside either. However, the major part of the book deals with more advanced techniques such as shaping details & refining deadwood, developing shari, restying, rock plantings etc. The illustrated examples are all from well known Bonsai artists such as Masahiko Kimura, Noboru Kaneko, Kunio Kobayshi etc.

The Magician: The Bonsai Art of Kimura 2 (Bonsai Today Masters Series, 2008)

Master Masahiko Kimura, also known as "The Magician," is the most famous bonsai master ever. Because of his willingness to break with traditional convention, many in Japan refused to take him seriously, at least in the early years. Now, no one disputes Kimura's genius or his pioneering position in the bonsai world. And the book? The book shows the master at work. The focus is on how-to, step-by-step transformations and the thinking that goes into creating some of the world's greatest masterpieces.

Shohin Bonsai: Unlocking the Secrets of Small Trees (Morten Albek, 2008)

Shohin bonsai cost less, take less time to develop, take less space, are easier to move, are less apt to be overwatered, and are a delight to behold. So why not start with shohin bonsai. This book thorough and beautiful exploration of the art of small bonsai is for experienced bonsai enthusiasts and daring beginners. If you already practice shohin, it will deepen your understanding. Now is the time to unlock the secrets of small trees.

Bonsai: Gestaltung und Pflege (Harry Tomlinson, 2004)

The book shows in easy-to-follow, step-by-step sequences show how to create and shape your own bonsai, and how to keep your established plants healthy and beautiful.

Kokufu Ten 80: (Anniversary Edition)

Album of the trees in the 80th annual "National Bonsai Exhibit" (Kokufu Bonsai Ten) held at the Metropolitan Art Museum in Ueno Park in Tokyo. I bought this book because I had the pleasure to visit the exhibition in 2006.
